Second Church of Christ In Killingworth ledger
Much of the history of the Griffin clan can be traced in the pages of the ledger kept by the “Second Church of Christ In Killingworth”. Captured in its pages are the minutes of the annual church meeting in which the church committee tasked with maintaining the congregation's affairs for the coming year was selected. It also records the installation and dismissal of the ministers that presided over the congregation. There are any number of little notations for church business. Detailed record were kept on church membership. A prominent list was of members who "Owned the Covenant" written as OC. We also see yearly lists kept for births, deaths and marriages. We have more often than not used the more commonly used name Congregational Second Society as we have made reference to this Congregational congregation. The term “Society” is an apt description. The church was about more than religion in the early days it was a life style. The ministers in Killingworth did a much better job in recording the vital records for their congregation than did most of the ministers in the surrounding communities. For this we own them a debt of gratitude. What you see here is the title page in the church ledger.
